Art for Autism ~ Call for Donations

Originally posted: http://www.artnowforautism.com/donate_art.html

This year we have two different calls for art. Both will be a part of the October 2008 online exhibit. We have the open call and a new puzzle pin call. We accept work from all artists including artists with autism spectrum disorders. The deadline is September 10, 2008. All money will be donated to Autism Speaks through the Washington, DC Walk Now for Autism.

Open Call for Art
All art is welcome. Painting, drawing, photography, collage, mixed media, book arts, jewelry, fiber, crafts, etc. Artwork does not need to be related to autism. Everything -- except that which may be considered pornographic or offensive -- is welcome. Since works will be mailed, please help us keep costs down by submitting a small piece. Try not to go beyond 18 inches in any direction. Frames and mattes are optional. Remember to include a price for your piece. Click here to see some of the art already received.

Puzzle Pin Project
The puzzle piece is a symbol used by the autism community. You might have seen the puzzle ribbon or the blue puzzle piece lapel pin worn by celebrities. We would like to take this idea and add an artsy flair. You can alter a puzzle piece or make one from scratch. Paint, draw, collage, whatever you do best then turn it into a pin. It can have an autism theme or anything you like. The pins will be sold for a donation of $25 each. Here are some examples...

The Sale: Art work will be available online during the month of October at www.artnowforautism.com. We also hope to have a display table at the Washington, DC Walk Now for Autism on November 8th. Any unsold work will be returned to the artist in November. All money raised will be donated to Autism Speaks through its Walk Now for Autism.

Deadline: Art must be received by September 10, 2008. This will give us time to create the online exhibit, publicity postcards and other materials, and new items in the Cafe Press shop.

Fees: There is no fee to be in this show. Money from the sale of art will go directly to Autism Speaks. If you like, you can also include a monetary donation to Autism Speaks with your submission. Make checks payable to Autism Speaks or make a donation online here.

Please include the following information with your piece:
Artist's Name
Title
Medium
Size
Suggested price (except for pins which will be sold for a donation of $25)-Artist's address
-Website
-Email address
Brief artist statement about the piece and/or artist (optional)

Send art to:

News from Chop Suey

On Saturday, August 9th from 11-4, ART 180 will be holding their Festival for Jonny Z, a street event celebrating not only the life and achievements of our dear, late friend Jonny Zanin, but also the art and change that his amazing life is still inspiring within our community. This event will take place outside of JOE'S INN (205 N. Shields). As you might know, an ART 180 class has already painted a mural on the side of the building. The class was funded by donations sent to ART 180 after Jonny Z passed away last year, and the students were taught about Jonny and the art aesthetics that he appreciated. This event will be an official unveiling of the mural project.
Because Jonny was a Bizarre Market organizer, the folks at ART 180 asked that the Bizarre Market set up in front of JOE'S INN as part of this celebration. Anna Virginia and I agreed, so now we are soliciting your help in spreading the word to artists, crafts people, and potential customers. As
with all Bizarre Markets, this will be open to everyone with no cost to set up. We will ask that all vendors donate 10% of their sales from the day to ART 180.

If you have anything to sell, or know someone who does, please drop us a line. And please remember that this Bizarre Market will be in front of JOE'S INN, not outside of Chop Suey. Anna and I are nervous that some people will go to the bookstore out of habit.

Another important change is that we will not be allowing food vendors to set up. This shouldn't create a problem, as Joe's will be open and serving food, and the market across from the restaurant will have snacks and drinks.

On a related topic, Quirk Gallery will be hosting an outdoor art market called The Handmake this Saturday, July 19th. You can expect to find a lot of great things there. Go visit and have a great time!

Thanks!
Ward

Googling You~

It takes less than 5 minutes to set up a FREE "Google Alert" to see if and when your name pops up in other blogs and websites.

Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Fill out the form to select once-a-day or once -a-week notifications. You will get an email listing all the sites where your name appears. It's really easy. Here's the link: http://www.google.com/alerts

Where to post Real Small Art?

You can either post Real Small Art in places that are "Points of Exchange" or places where art will be accidentally found. "Points of Exchange" include community bulletin boards, brochure tables or cooperating business spaces designated on the Real Small Art League Google Map.

People arriving at a Point of Exchange are looking for information, or possibly inspiration. They are most likely to take only what they want, including the Real Small Art you posted. A few days following the posting you can revisit Points of Exchange and remove your work, if it's still there.

Posting in other public spaces you'll risk: a. the art not being found. b. the person finding it to not actually want it. c. the person finding it to throw it away. Sometimes that's OK, but always secure permission to post your Real Small Art in public places. The Real Small Art League does not encourage destruction as a creative act.

When I post art I consider this quote by Mitch Hedburg, "When someone hands you a flier, it's like they're saying here you throw this away".
