Welcome back.

It's been a busy year, with lots of creative adventures ~ but we're drawn back together to celebrate unexpected creative kindness by this book. Unstuck: 52 Ways to Get (and Keep) Your Creativity Flowing at Home, at Work & in Your Studio, by Noah Scalin includes the Real Small Art League as #51.

Noah's collected ensemble of inspiration will kick start the most dormant creative juices in your "used-to-be-an-artist" brain. You'll read about art rock stars, leaders of awe inspiring collaboration, makers of beauty, grass roots stories that turned into household name phenomenons, and then there's us: the idea that a little work of art could go a long way.

It's true, Real Small Art League sparked unexpected opportunities for nearly everyone involved. From art exhibits, to free art fairs in the UK to Downtown redevelopment in Washington State, we've been amazed by what a little art can do. But then it grew bigger than we imagined, overwhelmed us, and screeched to a halt.

Ironically thanks to Noah's Unstuck, we're unstuck.

Teen Talent in the Mix

The Real Small Art League welcomes Clayton ~ a talented Richmond Teen whose dedication to the arts deserves recognition.

Clayton is a student from Thomas Dale Specialty Center for the Arts, traveling an hour to school each morning, and home again in the afternoon. His student portfolio is outstanding ~ with attention to detail, technique and originality.

Clayton spent part of the summer volunteering with Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, assisting with gallery tours, studio classes, material preparation and much more behind the scenes.

I met Clayton during the Children's Studio Class "Drawing in the Galleries". I was lucky to have his assistance during gallery tours and studio activities. The students enjoyed his presence in the studio as much as I appreciated his help.

He told me he read about the Real Small Art League in Richmond Grid Magazine, and he wanted to get involved. Not only did he want to participate, but he wants to start a chapter at his school this fall.

For his first "Real Small Art" series, Clayton created multi-media works on paper for strangers to find. He signed each piece with a "C", and invited the finder to share comments at realsmallart@yahoo.com

When I spoke with Clayton today, he shared the news that a local gallery had seen one of his pieces and invited him to have an exhibition.

About Creative Kindness Throwdown: In conjunction with Slash Coleman's The Art of Business Throwdown, the exhibit will feature original works of selected Real Small Art League members and opportunities to showcase the effect of creative kindness on both the artist and the audience. The competition between The Real Small Art League/Art180 and Richmond Craft Mafia/Richmond SPCA and is modeled after Donald Trump's television show "The Apprentice." Guest artist Noah Scalin will judge each team based on the philanthropic reach of their work for their chosen charity, overall sales, media exposure, and the growth of each team's platform. The winning team will be announced in November.

How did finding Real Small Art affect your day, if at all? Finding it was pretty neat! My wife and I found it together on our 1 year anniversary, so it was a pretty cool find!

"Geocaching in a Virginia State Parks is a great way to combine technology with good old-fashioned outdoor fun. The basic concept is that someone places a cache in the woods, usually a small container with a log book, and people use modern GPS receivers to find it. The Lost Cats Project proudly supports Real Small Art League and their upcoming group exhibition at Crossroads Art Center.

Be on the lookout for new litters of art cats that are getting lost all over the Richmond area. From Short Pump to Carytown, art cats are waiting to be found. Join the fun in a free, city-wide hide and seek game as artists hide tiny cat sculptures around RVA in public spaces.

You Never Know Where Kindness Ends

I leave pieces of art in public places that meet certain criteria ~ creative hubs, inpiriations, artful crowds, community points of information exchange... with the hope that people will find the art, choose to keep it and respond on the website. Sometimes I never know what happens to the art, and sometimes I hear news about a piece long after it put it out there.

Here's a recent email someone sent me:

Hi Tiffany -
I hope that this finds you well and enjoying the spring so far!

Been meaning to write to tell you that I took my son for his yearly
check-up the other day and while I was talking to the Nurse Practitioner in her office I noticed one of your real small flowers on the shelf above her desk. In the middle of something I was telling her I stopped and blurted out, “HEY! You have real small art!” She told me that she had found it in a geocache about a month ago and absolutely loved it – said it makes her smile whenever she goes into her office. So, thought you might like to know that your art is out there spreading smiles! :)

Guerrilla Visibility

Dear Real Small Art League Friends,

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Teen Class I'm excited about teaching this summer is called "Guerrilla Visibility", for students in grades 6-12.

Student artists will use social media tools to share their work with thousands of viewers. We'll create a exhibition geocache in Paradise Park (a pocket park in the fan), print and publish a mini-zine, post Real Small Art in Carytown and explore online portals for independent exhibitions.

The classes times/dates are:
Jul 26-30, 9 am-noon

Aug 16-20, 1-4 pm

We haven't stuck to our 1 per day plan, but we're going with the flow ~ and leaving a little artistic kindness where ever we go, even if it's not where we plan. Isn't that the point?

What's the theme of the show?
The Real Small Art League believes a little work of art can go a long way to inspire artistic kindness and creative awareness. We want you to show us your “must haves” ~ ideas, inspirations, possessions ~ using any medium, on a small flat surface.

Do I have to make SMALL art?

NO. Your art can be any size, any medium. The small part is a collaborative mini zine called...

The (MUST HAVE) Real Small Art Zine

Exhibition artists are invited to submit a digital image of their work for publication in the Must Have Zine, or miniature publication and virtual exhibition. To be included, submit a digital image of your work and $3 to cover the cost of printing. Each artist contributing a digital image will receive one copy of the Must Have Zine.

Where will the exhibit be?
The Real Small Art League will be in the Sidecar Gallery at the Crossroads Art Center, 2016 Staples Mill Rd, Richmond, VA 23230. Expect 2,000+ people at the opening.

What is the hang date?
Show dates are July 16th - Sept. 8th. Set up is the week before or even could be the weekend before. More details to come.

What is the commission split between gallery and artist for each sale? If you choose to sell your work ~ 40% commission paid to Crossroads 60% to the artist.

Real Small Art Geocache

The Real Small Art Geocache is being found more regularly now with the warmer weather. Here's one of my favorite recent logs:

My mother worked at this library just before it closed, and then at the "new" Bon Air library as I grew up. I read about this cache and I thought that this would be a good cache to try for when visiting her for Easter. Great spot! TFTC!

Hmmmmm I said - whatever could this be? Having just had shoulder surgery my first thought was that my Boston daughter - Sarah- had sent her Mama a little get well card.(handwriting was very similar to hers)

When I opened it - out popped a lovely little painting and a note from Tiffany - saying that Sarah had nominated me...

all new to me - I quickly went to the computer and typed in realsmallart.com.
As I read what it was all about I got a bigger and bigger smile on my face...

What a WONDERFUL idea!

I was delighted! I had met Tiffany a week prior and thought that the Real Small Art League was an excellent idea. I'm thrilled to participate.

What are you going to do with your Real Small Art? My flower painting lives in my kitchen. It is a reminder that one day we will finish fixing up the inside of our fixer-upper and will get to the weedy, neglected garden. We have only lived here since November and this is our first piece of art, up on display, aside from one of my own prints.

How did finding Real Small Art affect your day, if at all? Beauty always makes my day improve. The thoughtfulness and the preciousness of such a small, altruistic piece--it touched me.

The timing was so perfect: 1) I recieved it while planning the first showing of my new art project (creating notecards)! An amazing Real Small Art Nomination
(Last name omitted to protect Colin's identity)

My close friend, Colin, would make a perfect recipient of Real Small Art and give it a good home because he is one of the most giving people I have ever met. He has given his time and money volunteering with the American Cancer Society for years, he is the guy people call when they need car repairs, maintenance, a jump, to get pulled out of the mud (me), etc. He is a local teacher and I have seen him every week working on his classwork for his students for hours at his home and purchasing needed materials. He is my inspiration with his recent weight loss, he is going to participate in a benefit Bachelor Auction soon (which I would never do) and, with the recent foot of snowfall, he just volunteered at a local hospital driving people around in his four-wheel drive vehicle. All of this while taking care of his three cats. Most of all, he tries really hard, never gives up and he never gives up on his friends, This is why my friend, Colin, is a worthy recipient of Real Small Art and would give it a great home.

What is going on?! But my fiancee is a painter so we immediately started looking through all of the paintings in the cache! It was touching to see something so personal and have it be available to us for free.

With the success of the first talk20, 1708 Gallery and C3: the Creative Change Center are hosting the second talk20 event on Wednesday, February 10 at 6 p.m. at 1708 Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

talk20 is based on a series of short presentations of 20 slides each. Each presenter has 20 seconds per slide to express his or her very own artistic voice. The event will feature a hybrid of educators and professionals working in some branch of the creative field.

Participants for the upcoming event include artist and founder of the Real Small Art League Tiffany Glass Ferreira; innovative and sustainable architect Tamara Van Meter; painter Susan Singer (best known for her portraiture of naked women); LEGO artist Brian Korte; visionary architect Peter Fraser; artistic director for Amaranth Contemporary Dance Scott Puttman; visual artist Rosemary Jesionowski, and photographer Gordon Stettinius.

talk20 is not simply a lecture, but it focuses more along the lines of a gathering, an open forum for the dissemination of ideas in art, architecture and design.

A message from the artist:

Over the past month, I created 30 tiny paintings (3"x3" acrylic on wood panel) and just delivered them to the activities director at St. Mary's Woods assisted living home in the West End as part of the Real Small Art pro-bono/community project. This assisted living location was selected at random from the phone book, and needless to say, they were surprised and excited about this fun/free idea! They plan to hide the paintings in plain site around the facility for the residents to discover.

There is a tiny "Take Me!" note on the side of each panel, and a note on the back that reads: "Finders keepers! (Artist: A.H.Plante, Goochland VA, 2009. Make it, love it, give it away.) c/o Real Small Art League, Richmond VA -- Inspiring random acts of artistic kindness & creative awareness. Please go to realsmallart.com to help us track the project."

The residents should start finding these little guys in the next few days, so stay tuned. The director plans to e-mail feedback after all paintings have been found over the next few weeks.

Bugsss and I, LionsForge, were at Grayson-Highlands State Park October 3rd & 4th. While there we did some hiking and geocaching. There are a good number of caches in the park. We found one between the Pinnacles and swapped a Pwca (LionsForge Real Small Art) for a skull eraser. We had a great time. Looking forward to next time, more hikes and more caches to find. Next up we will find the Real Small Art cache and drop in a piece from each of us.

Have you heard of geocaching?

Described by geocaching.com, it’s a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. There are 878,742 active geocaches in the world, including more than 100 within a 5 mile radius of my house. Freaky.

Described by me, imagine two dots displayed on a map: The red dot = you, green dot = a cache. You walk towards the green dot, you find a cache. Now imagine the cache contains art.

So, I tried it today. I wasn’t sure if I could actually find a cache, but this morning I took my kids to the same park, the same path, the same place we’ve visited at least three times this month… and there, we found our first cache. I put art in the cache, finders keepers.

Tiny Art Heist

Artist searches for missing pieces after tiny art heist at VCU.

The tiny art exhibit at VCU, sits in locker 50-B in the Fine Arts Building.

In what may be the smallest art heist in history, three tiny reinforcing-bar pieces were stolen from a Real Small Art League exhibit at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Inside a 14-by-19-inch locker on the third floor of the Fine Arts Building, Richard Garrett Jr.'s art is featured in an exhibit with a tiny wooden floor, tiny paintings on the tiny walls and tiny exhibit lights. Garrett, a member of the Real Small Art League, says he noticed something was amiss around June 19.

He noticed three pieces were missing: medallions imprinted with smiley faces that formed a pattern on the wooden floor. Garrett notified the art gallery's director, Erin Neff, and then posted a message on the art league's Web site asking the thief to come forward ~ anonymously if necessary.

Typically, the Real Small Art League doesn't mind thievery. Small-art artists often leave their pieces around the city with a sign that reads "Take Me." There's one exception: People who find the art and keep it must go to the Real Small Art League's Web site, and write what the art means to them and what they think about it.

The size of the league's work allows it to give away pieces because they're inexpensive and less time consuming to create than bigger pieces, Garrett says. For the stolen pieces, Garrett heated the metal and hammered it into shape, adding the tiny smiley faces.

Garrett's drawn to small art mainly because of its affordability, he says. "So often you see a painting for thousands of dollars," he says. "A lot of people feel that only rich people can have art, which doesn?t have to be the case."

As for the theft, Garret isn't too heartbroken. "I thought it was a compliment," he says. "Someone was that industrious to worm their way in there to take three of my pieces."

The "Posted: Real. Small. Art.," will be on display until July 14 on the third floor of VCU's Fine Arts Building, 1000 W. Broad St.

Clarification: In earlier print and online versions, Style failed to identify other contributors to the Locker 50b Gallery. Other artists featured in the exhibit include Tiffany Glass Ferreira, Shelia Gray and Sarah Stegal.

What are you going to do with your Real Small Art? I LOVE my real small art. I plan to frame it in a shadowbox and hang it in my home...with the note that was enclosed on the back. And I will be sharing the story with everyone.

How did finding Real Small Art effect your day, if at all? It totally brightened my evening. I had just left my mom at a nursing home and found the real small art stopping at the grocery store on the way home. I was so interested in the whole project. I carried it in my purse for a coiple of weeks, showing it to everyone I saw.

You are now free to speak your mind. What do you think about this project? I think this is a great project. For me, it was very exciting to find such a wonderful treasure in the grocery store parking lot. And I was thrilled to share my treasure wit hall of my friends.

Wearable Real Small Art posted at Crossroads Coffee on Forrest Hill Ave this morning ~ tiny iron on patches that have the following instructions attached:

1. Put the flower side down onto cotton fabric (t-shirt, jeans, etc.)
2. With the iron on the highest setting, apply pressure while moving the iron back and forth for 1 minute
3. Peel the white backing off once it?s cool to the touch

Richmond’s Real Small Art League Offers Summer Workshops to Inspire Random Acts of Artistic Kindness and Creative Awareness

Richmond, VA – Two upcoming summer art workshops, lead by Richmond’s Real Small Art League, will encourage artists of all ages to create, document and give away tiny original works of art. The first workshop will be hosted by Crossroads Art Center on Saturday, June 20 from 2-4 pm. Artists of all ages are encouraged to attend. There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of space and materials. The second workshop, designed for children with adult chaperones, will be hosted by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday, July 18, from 1-3 pm. There is a fee of $25 per child, with each child being accompanied by an adult.

The hands-on workshops will teach students how to create original Real Small Art, document the process, and join the Real Small Art League’s online forum. Currently over 25 participating artists leave small samples of their body of work for public discovery around the world. The posted artwork is documented online via www.realsmallart.com, along with public response to the found art.

The Real Small Art League asks artists to post their works in publically acceptable places, like the bulletin board at Ellwood Thompson’s Coffee Shop. When a recent finder was asked “How did finding Real Small Art effect your day, if at all?”, they replied, “It totally made me smile. I was on my first weekend getaway with my girlfriend and we were having a wonderful time already - this made it even more of a whimsical, fun, who-knows-what-we'll-find adventure.”

“We believe a little art can go a long way,” says Tiffany Glass Ferreira, founder of Richmond’s Real Small Art League. “When people find real art in everyday places, it reminds them that artists are part of their community. We need to be aware of the creative talent in our own backyard, and support the imagination, passion and our dedication of local artists.”

The coffeehouse we found the art in is our absolute favorite stop on the Banks. We snuck down for a short weekend get-away when I found this cheery piece of art sitting next to the creamer as I mixed my coffee that morning. My five year old daughter was extremely excited to find the artwork. She felt as though she had won the lottery. She could not wait to come back home and e-mail the artist.
